On August 12, 1796, Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin received its first prisoners. On 12 August 1796, Kilmainham Gaol received its first prisoners. Prisoners at Kilmainham Gaol included the leaders of the 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867, and 1916 uprisings; Éamon de Valera, Pádraig Pearse, and Charles Stewart Parnell were all housed there.
