A three-member inquiry committee set up under the Judges Inquiry Act and headed by Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar has concluded that every charge levelled against Justice Yashwant Varma stands "proved", The Hindu reported. The controversy dates to the night of 14 March 2025, when a fire broke out at Justice Varma's official residence. Justice Varma has since stepped down, which has effectively rendered the removal proceedings against him redundant. More than 200 MPs endorsed a removal motion against him in July 2025, and Birla constituted the statutory inquiry committee the following month. Such a resignation does not require acceptance, though the President grants formal acceptance before the Department of Justice notifies it.
