A parliamentary standing committee has proposed a wide-ranging overhaul of India’s bus transport system, covering interstate permits, passenger safety, terminals, digital services, vehicle testing and public transport funding. The panel has also urged the Centre to make public transport a larger priority in road infrastructure spending. To improve terminal management, the committee has proposed a National Bus Terminals Authority on the lines of the Airports Authority. A National Code for Bus Terminals should also be framed within one year, the panel said. Finally, the panel wants an annual “State of the States” ranking of bus transport facilitation.
