He warned against prematurely stopping food imports, saying doing so without first enabling farmers to return safely to their farms could trigger another surge in food prices. The TUC leader said the government should sustain the food-importation policy until domestic production was capable of meeting demand. He, however, stressed that food imports should ultimately give way to increased domestic production once security and supply challenges had been addressed. Osifo said the TUC’s position was not against domestic food production but was based on the immediate need to ensure Nigerians could afford food. He said bringing the exchange rate closer to ₦1,000/$ would have a direct effect on the prices of goods and services.
