This refers to the article ‘UPI is not a ‘cost’ to be recovered’ (August 11). The plan to impose a fee on person-to-merchant UPI payments above a certain threshold risks undermining the very scheme this government promoted after demonetisation to usher the nation into a less-cash, more formal economy. Its real impact would fall on person-to-merchant payments, which account for two-thirds of the total value. Any fallback towards cash transactions due to the extra cost would far exceed, directly and indirectly, the cost of sustaining the UPI.
