The Delta State government has suspended Reuben Izeze, commissioner for works (highway and urban roads), indefinitely over allegations linking him to the assault of Simon Mudi, senior special assistant on protocol to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. The suspension takes immediate effect. The decision was announced in a statement signed by Kingsley Emu, secretary to the state government, on Monday. The government said the suspension was necessary to allow security agencies to conduct an impartial investigation.“The suspension is to enable the security agencies to carry out an unbiased investigation of allegations associating him with the assault on the Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Mr Simon Mudi, also known as Temple, at the Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, recently,” the statement read. The development followed the circulation of a video showing Mudi being chased and repeatedly struck with bottles and chairs during a political meeting at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun on Sunday. The footage captured chaotic scenes as several men pursued Mudi while he tried to escape.Mudi was later seen receiving treatment in hospital with visible bruises and a bloodied head, while wearing an APC-branded safari. The government said the move was required to ensure the investigation proceeded without interference. It reaffirmed that public safety and the maintenance of law and order remain priorities of the administration, adding that the principle applied “even when institutions of state are involved.”The suspension came after an alleged confrontation between Izeze and Mudi at the PTI in Effurun. The circumstances of the incident are expected to form part of the probe by security agencies. The state government did not disclose how long the investigation would last or whether Izeze would be reinstated afterwards.
