A high-level government committee arrived in Jammu today for a three-day visit to examine demographic shifts near the Pakistan border, marking its first assessment of population changes in the region. The committee will visit settlements housing Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals tomorrow, including Qasim Nagar, Muralian and Jagti, as well as locations along the International Border in Kathua and Samba districts. The demographic changes witnessed in the border areas of Jammu, mainly Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts which share an international boundary with Pakistan, have posed a serious threat as there have been reports that some of the illegally settled people may have been facilitating terrorists to reach safer areas after infiltration from the International Border. The visit comes days after police detained 21 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in Ramban district who were heading towards Kashmir Valley. The panel's findings will be submitted to Union Home Minister Amit Shah as part of a broader national assessment of demographic changes arising from illegal immigration.
