A coalition of eleven medical device industry associations has approached Union Health Minister J P Nadda with a demand for dedicated legislation to govern medical devices, Business Standard reported. The appeal comes shortly after the government floated a draft Drugs, Medical Devices and Cosmetics Bill for consultation with stakeholders. One leading domestic medtech body, in its formal response, stated that the 2026 draft could not be backed as it stands. According to the submission, the proposed law "is pharma-centric, criminalisation heavy and misaligned with global norms." Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator for the Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AiMeD), pointed out that the draft still relied on drug-oriented language like "adulterated" and "spurious," extending pharma-style penal provisions to what are essentially engineering-related lapses.
