Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, has said the
reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will depend on the United States accepting
conditions set by Tehran, pushing back against reports that negotiations
between Iran and Oman could lead to the immediate reopening of the strategic
waterway.
IRGC spokesman, Hossein Mohebbi, quoted by Iran’s Tasnim
news agency, said the status of the strait was separate from the ongoing
discussions between Iran and Oman.
He said reopening the waterway would be governed by
“specific mechanisms and conditions” determined by Iran.
The statement followed reports from a US official that
negotiations involving Iran and Oman had made progress and could soon result in
the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a development that could ease
disruptions to global oil supplies.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said earlier that Tehran and Muscat
were working to finalise arrangements for jointly managing the strategic
waterway.
Iranian officials have also indicated that any decision to
reopen the strait could be tied to the removal of US restrictions on Iranian
shipping.
