Labor is split on plans to ‘performatively’ reduce migration. Good

You’d hate to be Tony Burke today.
Or any day, really.
The government is split over plans to tweak migration rules, which the home affairs minister was due to announce at the Press Club this week (an appearance that had to be postponed).
Measures being canvassed include tougher family visa rules, capping backpacker numbers, and limiting asylum seekers’ work and appeal rights, all intended to reduce net overseas migration figures, which can be difficult for governments to control.
Depending on who Burke is listening to, the changes either go too far or not far enough.
