Who can name the governor-general?
Redbridge polling this week shows that Governor-General Sam Mostyn wasn’t recognised by 52% of Australians, The Nightly reports.
Its piece came with an excellently snarky headline: “Well may we say God save the king, because no-one can name the governor-general”, a reference to the Whitlam Dismissal over 50 years ago, likely the last time a majority of Australians would have been able to recognise the monarch’s representative in the antipodes.
The piece by Latika Bourke quotes political historian Frank Bongiorno, who explained that it isn’t really a big deal that people don’t know the name of an unelected official.
