England is on track this year for the highest number of heat-related deaths since records began, according to estimates by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). In a preliminary assessment, it said there were an estimated 2,877 heat-related deaths during the May and June heatwaves, almost double the figure for the whole of last year. An estimated 753 deaths were associated with the 24-27 May heatwave and a further 2,124 with the one from 21-28 June. The current record for heat-related deaths was set in 2022, when 2,985 deaths were recorded. Thompson added: "These figures highlight the significant danger that very hot weather can pose to people's health.
