One person is dead, more than 100 have been injured, and dozens of people were feared trapped in a collapsed shopping mall after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit southern Japan early Tuesday.
Article contentLocal broadcaster TBS reported a “considerable number” of people were feared dead inside the shopping mall in Kashima after the fire department said the second floor of the mall collapsed in the quake.
“Many people” were trapped in the building, according to emergency responders, but they couldn’t confirm any deaths.
The mall recently commemorated the 10th anniversary of its recovery from a 2016 earthquake, and was said to have included seismically reinforced ceilings to improve safety.
