REUTERS/Amit DaveRIYADH — Oman has presented a proposal to Iran for joint regional management of the Strait of Hormuz with shipping firms paying voluntary fees, a Gulf source told Reuters on Tuesday. "Any proposal for new shipping routes or traffic management measures should be submitted to IMO for consideration by member states," an IMO spokesperson said. The IMO established the recognized international shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz in 1968. "At the same time ... Oman sees merit in exploring voluntary arrangements relating to navigational support services," it said. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed the Strait of Hormuz with his Omani and Saudi counterparts on Monday.
