Inner Mongolia grassland finds unlikely shield in plant-eating insects

Times of India
In 2005, scientists began reshaping a semi-arid grassland in Inner Mongolia by changing its mix of plants.
They measured species variety, group types, individual stability, and peak breeding times across three main levels: plants, herbivores, and predators.
We asked whether the mechanisms known to stabilize plant communities also scale up to a more complex, multitrophic system, including plants, herbivores and predators.
"In our study, the strongest and most consistent predictor of multitrophic stability was not plant species dynamics nor predator species dynamics.
It was the fact that different herbivore species fluctuated at different times.
