Collector orders fire safety audit of buildings in old market areas in Coimbatore before Deepavali

Mr. Giriyappanavar, who inspected the firefighting on Big Bazaar Street building, held a discussion with DFO P. Pulukandi and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran on the audit plan. The Collector instructed the officials to complete the audit before Deepavali. The audit is expected to cover old and continuous buildings at busy market places such as Big Bazaar Street, Oppanakara Street, Raja Street, Variety Hall Road and Sukrawarpet, among others. Fire and Rescue Services officials say that the majority of these old buildings lack setback areas around them for fire safety purposes. As the gap between two buildings is either narrow or nil in the case of many buildings, there is no space to park firefighting vehicles.
