In a stringent action against those not participating as enumerators in the ongoing Social and Educational Survey, the State government has given the sack to six anganwadi workers in Raichur district. This comes days after the State Cabinet decided to take disciplinary action against those skipping the survey work. This sweeping action has drawn the ire of the Karnataka State Anganwadi Workers Union, which has threatened a State-wide agitation if the dismissal order is not withdrawn. The union has argued that many anganwadi workers do not have smartphones required to download the app for the survey and the government without providing adequate facilities cannot insist that they participate in the survey. Varalakshmi, president, Karnataka State Anganwadi Workers’ Union, said anganwadi workers were expected to use their own smartphones for the survey, and the above six were very poor and did not possess them.
