Water level continued to surge in the Godavari at Basar in Nirmal district on Sunday due to release of floodwaters from the upstream dams, leaving several low-lying areas near the Godavari banks in the temple town inundated. Floodwaters from the river encircled several private lodges and a choultry causing severe inconvenience to the devotees amid the ongoing Sarannavaratri festivities in the temple town, the abode of Goddess Gnana Saraswati. Sources said that the devotees had to wade through knee-deep water in the flooded streets. All the irrigation projects including the Sriramsagar (SRSP), Kaddam Narayan Reddy and Sripada Yellampalli projects are brimming with water due to steady inflows from the upstream dams. The Godavari river is in free flow condition at Lakshmi (Medigadda) barrage of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Mahadevpur mandal of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.
