The constitution of the one-woman Inquiry Commission into the Karur stampede is just a ritual, said Naam Tamilar Katchi leader Seeman here on Sunday. The loss of lives is very saddening, and the stampede should and could have been avoided, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Selvaperunthagai described it as a big disaster after the stampede at the 1992 Kumbakonam mahamagam. Former BJP State president K. Annamalai and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam called for a CBI probe into the incident. Former interim general secretary of the AIADMK, V.KSasikala blamed police negligence for the stampede and demanded that the Centre should intervene as a state probe was not enough.
