Photo Credit: Natascha RiveraTHOUSANDS of people – including lawyers, architects, solicitors, and other professionals – took to the streets of Madrid near the centre on Saturday, September 27 in a mass protest against the low pensions from private mutual insurance funds. The #J2 protests demand a system, which they are calling a pasarela, or “bridge,” that would allow these professionals to collect a public pension rather than the mutual insurance company’s benefits. Now, the movement demands a gateway scheme to transfer their contributions to the Social Security self-employment scheme in Spain, or RETA, as it is known. This is a problem that affects more than 100,000 workers in Spain (some 70,000 lawyers and solicitors and approximately 35,000 architects and technical architects).
