Sexual crimes have soared to record levelsThe number of sex crimes has increased by 8% to a record high, with 214,816 incidents reported to police in the year to September, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed. The total number of sex crimes recorded was equivalent to 588 incidents every day. In 2003, the figure stood at fewer than 57,000 reported sex crimes, with the continued rise in offences attributed in part to improved recording practices by police forces.
