Wine has been produced by traditional landholders in the Alto Douro Region for some 2,000 years. The cultural landscape of the Alto Douro Wine Region is an outstanding example of humankind’s unique relationship with the natural environment. The Alto Douro Wine Region has, and undoubtedly always had, a different meaning according to the perspective of each interest group. Protecting and managing the Alto Douro Wine Region (ADWR) is a rather complex task considering the property’s size, the diversity of entities involved and the high number of owners and stakeholders.
