Just days before two automated speed enforcement cameras are set to be activated in Parry Sound, Premier Doug Ford denounced the use of them and called speed cameras a “tax grab”. During an event in Toronto on Sept. 9, Ford told reports he hoped cities and towns would follow the lead of Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca and get rid of speed cameras following public outcry. He also said, if municipalities didn’t act, he would “help them get rid of them very shortly.”The province’s Ministry of Transportation re-iterated Ford’s stance, when questions on the topic. “We are exploring alternative tools to enhance traffic safety without the use of automatic speed cameras that are nothing but a cash grab,” said Dakota Brasier, a Ministry spokesperson, in an email to Moose FM. “We want to see cities take steps to remove them, otherwise we are prepared to help get rid of them when the House returns in the Fall.”The House of Commons fall sitting begins Sept. 15, the same day the two speed enforcement cameras in Parry Sound are scheduled to be activated.
