[Image: Boyd & Ogier]The V&A Waterfront has already kicked off its jaw-dropping R20 billion-plus expansion towards Granger Bay, reclaiming roughly 3.2 hectares from Table Bay – yes, that’s almost five football fields. Meanwhile, behind The Table Bay Hotel at the northern end of Breakwater Boulevard, construction is in full swing on a gargantuan new basement. The Table Bay is being revamped for R901 million and will reopen as the InterContinental Table Bay, now managed by Sun International (who previously leased it). The plan is ultimately to build a seawall (technically, a revetment) about 540 metres long, with two breakwaters poking into Table Bay – 90 metres west, 140 metres east. Land-based amenities will include a coastal public walkway, a slipway, a fixed quayside, a landscaped promenade, tidal pools, pedestrian paths, and open areas.” Expect three years of breakwater and seawall construction.
