WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower court’s ban on immigration agents’ racial profiling of Latinos in Southern California, backing President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. “Whether an officer has reasonable suspicion depends on the totality of the circumstances,” Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the majority. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latin American member of the court, wrote a scathing dissent that the two other liberal justices, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also slammed Monday’s decision from the Supreme Court. The lower court blocked immigration agents from using “apparent ethnicity” as a method for determining if an individual violated immigration law.
