Lovell revealed that Spencer had called him for an urgent meeting, telling him simply that he had to come back.
The turning point came when Coates approached him again, this time with full endorsement from the local branch.
However, he expressed confidence about the strategic advantages of the larger constituency.
In expressing mixed feelings about the matchup Lovell described Smith as someone who “was like a son to me” politically.
