Earlier this month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the creation of a new European Center for Democratic Resilience. Europe understands that democracy requires infrastructure, long-term investment and permanent institutions capable of meeting 21st-century threats. This independent, non-partisan fund would serve as the cornerstone of a resilient democratic ecosystem in Canada. Without democratic resilience, Canada is vulnerable to manipulation from abroad and division from within. Declining trust in our public institutions undermines our ability to respond collectively to our most pressing challenges — from public health emergencies and natural disasters to nation-building projects and economic growth.
