The River Brue begins in Brewham near Bruton and flows over the Somerset Levels, separating Glastonbury and Street, before reaching the sea at Highbridge. The Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) - which was created following the disastrous floods of 2013/14 - has now proposed widening Highbridge Clyce as part of a wider series of measures designed to reduce flood risk within the wider Brue catchment. Highbridge Clyce is built across the River Brue at the end of Clyce Road, and is designed to prevent saltwater from the Bristol Channel from moving upstream and bursting the river's banks during high tides. Following extensive research and modelling work, the SRA board met in Taunton on September 12 to agree a series of short-, medium- and long-term aspirations to improve the River Brue and the related River Sheppey catchment. A further update on these proposals is expected to come before the SRA board at its next meeting on December 5.
