With warm weather records in the UK continuing to be broken, the trade association said urgent action was needed to prevent homes overheating. BESA’s technical director Kevin Morrissey said “overheating is the most overlooked building safety issue”, with potential solutions including passive and mechanical systems. Morrissey suggested the figures demonstrate new long term weather trends which will require greater adaptation in buildings. BESA suggested the current drive to deliver greater energy efficiency through insulation should be offset by better ventilation and cooling. Recent research has suggested a rapid rise in air-conditioning purchases to combat rising temperatures, though BESA say expansion must be carefully managed.
