The Egyptian authorities announced this afternoon that Alaa Abd El-Fattah, 43, according to his lawyer Khaled Ali and an announcement by Egypt’s state TV. Mr Abd El-Fattah has spent most of the past decade in prison because of his criticism of Egypt’s rulers and is unable to see his young son who lives in Brighton. Laila Soueif, Mr Abd El-Fattah’s mother, said she was heading to the prison where her son is held. He was first sent to prison in 2014 for taking part in an unauthorised protest and allegedly assaulting a police officer.
