The Malthouse in Steyning acted as a secret escape for Dame Joan Plowright and her husband Lord Laurence Olivier when they wanted a break from the crowds of London and Hollywood. But following Dame Joan’s death at the age of 95 in January, the home was put on the market with offers in the region of £2 million. The house has now had its price reduced to £1,650,000, according to Rightmove. And the Malthouse was also where Dame Joan and her friends (and fellow dames) Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins would meet. Nothing Like a Dame was re-aired following the death of Pulborough resident Dame Maggie in September last year.
