The England national flags are currently flying by Brighton Racecourse in Freshfield Road and in Warren Road, Brighton. This comes a week after the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, Councillor Bella Sankey, has said the raising of St George’s flags and Union Jacks across the city has caused “fear and distress”. She said at the time: “Let me be clear that Brighton and Hove is a city of sanctuary, a place of welcome and compassion and that hate wrapped in the flag has no place here. The flags appeared on the A259 between Rottingdean and Peacehaven, as well as in the city centre in West Street and outside Churchill Square. They were initially taken down but were restored.
