Brighton and Hove City Council has issued a letter to parents and guardians encouraging them to delay giving their children smartphones, and showing full support for schools which opt to become smartphone free. Signed by Councillor Emma Daniel, cabinet lead for children, families and youth services, the letter says that the council “fully supports schools in Brighton and Hove which decide to become smartphone free”. The decision has been celebrated by the Brighton and Hove Smartphone Free Childhood group who have been petitioning the council to publicly support the campaign. We want all schools to be smartphone free and encourage all parents to sign the parent pact. Now I can say to my children, ‘see, the council say we shouldn’t do it’.
