The County Commission voted Wednesday not to pay the legal bills of former Deputy Daniel Wilkey, who was cleared of a variety of charges in Federal Court and still faces litigation in Chancery Court. There was no discussion of the issue - except jto say that commissioners had been briefed by the county attorney (Janie Parks Varnell). Attorney Jim Exum, who represents the International Brotherhood of Police Officers (IBPO), said Wilkey "was part of the Hamilton County Employees Liability Plan" and was entitled to representation. He said another deputy will exactly the same charges as Wilkey in one case was covered by the county, while Wilkey was not. He said the office later said it would not pay, even though a federal jury ruled in Wilkey's favor.
