Recent years have made way for similar iterations, coined “field” and “barn” jackets, with utilitarian features including (but not limited to) multiple pockets, corduroy collars, metallic buttons and sometimes a waxed coating. Fashion co-signs of the barn jacket have come courtesy of Jonathan Anderson, who debuted cropped, waxed-cotton jackets with checked linings – reminiscent of Barbour jackets – at Loewe’s spring/summer 2023 show, which mimicked the sculptural silhouettes of his micro-hemline minidresses. A year later, for Prada spring/summer 2024, Miuccia Prada fully kickstarted the trend with worn-in barn jackets in navy, khaki, brown and hunter green, layered atop tasselled and sheer skirts, which brought a “walking the dog” nonchalance to her directional separates.
