A few years ago, I was curious about exploring the subject of the FN 5.7 cartridge as a survival rifle option. Is the FN 5.7 a Useful Survival Round? Developed in 1990 by Fabrique Nationale Herstal (FN) for NATO as a potential replacement for the 9mm pistol round, the FN 5.7 landed in cartridge limbo for a few reasons. Early in 2021, the FN 5.7 was finally accepted as a NATO standard cartridge followed by SAAMI standardization mid 2024. The same sites listed the centerfire FN 5.7 for $0.50 to $1.10 per round.
