May 6, 1949 - Aug 30, 2025 Wayne Warren Smith, 76, of St. Peter, MN, passed away peacefully at home on August 30, 2025, surrounded by his family after a three year battle with cancer. Wayne was born in Chicago, IL in 1949 to George and Violet Smith. However, during his adolescent and teen years, Wayne was proudly raised by his grandmother, Maude Smith. Wayne attended and graduated high school from Albert City Truesdale. After high school, Wayne attended college at Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls, IA and earned an Associates of Arts degree. He also attended Mankato State College. While in college, Wayne met his life partner, Joann. On September 8, 1973, Wayne and Joann were united in marriage. Through their marriage, they built a life in St. Peter, MN, and raised five children. Wayne worked and retired from the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center where he was employed as a Lead Security Counselor. Throughout his working years, Wayne worked multiple jobs from driving the city bus, to working night security at Unimin. Wayne worked very hard for his family being employed by multiple jobs at a time for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed playing chess, analyzing chess games and different techniques. Wayne taught chess at local schools and enjoyed being involved in tournaments. He loved to collect coins, sports cards, and enjoyed watching sporting events such as the Iowa Hawkeyes and MN Wild. Another title Wayne held was Grandpa. Wayne could always put a smile on his grandchildren's faces by offering up a silly story. Wayne truly treasured his time with his "grands". Wayne leaves behind his devoted wife, Joann. His daughters: Marnie (Chris) Ploog; Karlie (Shaun) Fitzner; and son: Alec Smith. Grandchildren: Lydia & Gavin Ploog; Kaleb & Kennedy Hubrig; Tristan, Jameson, & Scarlett Smith. Step-grandchildren Kayla & Noah Fitzner. Proceeding him in death were his sons, Jae and Gareth; brothers Gary and George Smith; his grandma Maude Smith; his parents; and In-laws Edward & Jeanne Skilling. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the St. Peter RedMen Club. A private burial service will be held separately.
