The Wall Street Journal’s USA250 series asked a group of economists to make a long-term forecast: What will American capitalism look like in 2075? I would guess that back at the Bicentennial, plenty of experts likely saw anything but a future where capitalism would be severely constrained by resource limits. It was a time of stagflation, oil shocks, and a productivity slowdown that seemed to herald permanent sclerosis. Like most of the world today, the US will have a value-added tax. Cultural optimism will become a productive force, as solutionist thinking replaces dystopian fatalism and society once again celebrates building over blocking.
