President Trump Photo : APThe Trump administration is seeking up to a 10% equity stake in Lithium Americas as part of renegotiations over the company’s $2.26 billion Department of Energy loan for the Thacker Pass lithium project, Reuters reported.
Lithium Americas is developing the Thacker Pass mine in Nevada, which is set to become the largest lithium source in the Western Hemisphere upon its opening in 2028.
However, Trump officials are now pushing to restructure the loan amid concerns over Lithium Americas’ ability to repay due to low lithium prices influenced by Chinese overproduction.
As part of the renegotiation, Lithium Americas offered no-cost warrants representing 5-10% of its common shares to the government, which could translate into significant ownership for the US.
With a current market value of nearly $750 million, Lithium Americas is among several companies developing lithium projects in the US, a sector that is receiving heightened attention due to the global push for electric vehicles and clean energy technologies.
