Pitri Paksha, which began on Ashwin Krishna Pratipada, is concluding today during the afternoon period (Aparahna Kala) with Tarpan, Sidha Daan, and Pinda Daan offered in the name of departed ancestors. Pitri Paksha spans sixteen lunar days – 15 days of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) and 1 day of Ashwin Shukla Pratipada. The final day of Pitri Paksha, which is today, is observed on Amavasya (also called Aunsi Tithi). There is a scriptural injunction stating that not performing Shraddha during Pitri Paksha results in grave spiritual fault (dosha). With the conclusion of Pitri Paksha, Durga Paksha (Bada Dashain) officially begins.
