Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal have officially recognized Palestine as a state. Their announcements on Sunday came while the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues to further deteriorate. Analysts say they along with Australia and Portugal are hoping to boost momentum toward a ceasefire and long-term peace in the Gaza Strip while applying pressure on Israel. The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations said late last month it was "very possible" for around 10 countries to recognize the Palestinian state before or during the conference. "A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River," he said.
