Russian President Vladimir Putin has effectively proposed a one-year extension to the New START treaty -- a nuclear arms control pact due to expire in 2026. The US-Russia treaty, which established a cap on the number of deployed warheads on each side, is set to expire on February 5 next year. The New START is the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the US and Russia. In July, US President Donald Trump signaled his willingness to extend the New START treaty. Trump also said last month that he wants to open denuclearization talks with China and Russia.
