The third and final run of Australian drama The Newsreader lands on the BBC starting today. The show centres on television news production and presentation in the 1980s – when TV was so much simpler than today, with few channels and people watching live, but also discrimination in the workplace was so much more upfront than it is now. At the centre of the tale, Helen and Dale are a straight woman and a bi man whose careers and lives encircle each other across the decade; season three is set against a background of reporting events like the Lockerbie bombing and the Tiananmen Square showdown between pro and anti democracy factions in China. While Helen seems to be on the up, Dale’s career is heading downhill as the pressures of being in the closet take their toll.
