The diagrams at right show t-SNE plots for five different perplexity values. The image for perplexity 100, with merged clusters, illustrates a pitfall: for the algorithm to operate properly, the perplexity really should be smaller than the number of points. There may not be one perplexity value that will capture distances across all clusters—and sadly perplexity is a global parameter.
