According to North Korea’s state-controlled Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong Un, the country’s autocratic leader, inspected the performance test of unmanned weapons and equipment. He also reiterated his intention to respect the regime of North Korea while saying that he would not seek unification by absorption. Thus there is a possibility of Trump making a deal with North Korea that goes against South Korea’s security interests. Utilizing Kim’s growing interest in showing off his leverage in the international diplomatic stage, a multilateral dialogue incorporating those concerned with the broader issues posed by North Korea should be launched. Now is the time for South Korea to seek proactive diplomacy so as not to let the Korean Peninsula become the site of a new Cold War.
