Thailand’s immigration authority has denied any connection to online scamming operations, following the publication of a Reuters investigation linking Thai officials to the trafficking of people into scam centers in eastern Myanmar. In its report, which was published September 18, Reuters described the “pivotal role” played by purported immigration officials at Thai airports in supplying human trafficking victims to scam operations in Myanmar and elsewhere. In a statement issued on Saturday, Police Maj. Gen. Choengron Rimpadee of the Thai immigration police said that Reuters had “distorted facts and made false allegations,” the Bangkok Post reported. This is all the more true given the well-documented corruption in which the Thai police and other elements of the Thai state have long been involved.
