Max: I think we were at a certain point in the development of Zed where we had already developed a system and then did a lot of work for a while that didn't involve lots of buttons and forms and UI and stuff. I remember on Atom, Nathan getting a vision to rewrite the way the text editor worked, from concept A to concept B, and I would just have to say to other people—which is kind of a hard thing to say as an engineering manager—that is not typically the way we do things, but I would never bet against the combination of Nathan having a creative vision for the ideal way it should be and then Antonio coming and no matter what's broken, making it work. Max: I think you have a point that open source code doesn't mean the code has to be perfect.
