The dragons of Hawaiian lore inhabit island waters — sometimes as protective deities, sometimes as shapeshifting threats. As Hiʻiaka travels island to island, she encounters many moʻo. Most moʻo of legend are female, shapeshifters capable of appearing as beautiful maidens or water dragons.
