A job promotion is just like everything else we do and make; like buildings and cities and commerce and transport and pool tables at work – first it starts with an idea, then it morphs into a plan, then a whole bunch of hard work takes place to make it happen. Create a briefing document and begin a formal discussion with your boss and outlining your reasons, targets and timelines and get seek feedback on the likelihood of promotion as well as any gaps or blind spots you may have. The same skills that allowed you to perform well technically before promotion are not the same skills that will equip you to lead people effectively.
