OpenAI Mulls ID Checks for Adult Users in Wake of Teen Suicide Lawsuit

Credit: TechCrunch/FlickrOpenAI has announced plans to develop a new automated age-gating system to provide firmer safeguards for users under 18.
This is a different juggling act for OpenAI, as it is being asked to provide greater protections for its younger users while protecting their privacy and that of adult users who don't want guardrails in place.
ChatGPT is designed for users 13 and up, he said, but added the stipulation that those under 18 needed greater protection.
Beyond that, though, ChatGPT may even involve authorities or parents in cases of younger user interactions that are flagged as dangerous.
As Ars Technica points out, some studies have found a mere 54% success rate in detecting user age without explicit cooperation or sterile settings.
